 The Fishing Season

....................................................

October: Lowland rivers open, high country rivers still closed. Some lower sections of high country rivers are open all year and offer fishing. Good lake edge fishing.

November: High country streams and rivers open offering excellent nymph fishing. As the month progresses temperatures increase and dry fly fishing improves.

December- Least crowded month to fish NZ waters. Very good fishing on all streams and lakes using dry flies and nymphs. Can be a great time to fish and explore.  Weather can vary from very hot to cold !

January: Weather settles providing excellent nymph and dry fly fishing.

February: generally most settled month of the summer. Rivers become low and clear providing excellent and challenging fishing.

March : rivers are typically low and clear. Good dry fly fishing early in the month but as the month progresses temperatures begin to cool from the highs of summer and the dry fly fishing slows.

April/May: temperatures become cooler but generally settled weather. There can be some excellent fishing for well conditioned brown and rainbow trout.

June-September : Snow on the  mountains and temperatures around freezing ! River mouth fishing is good and there are several rivers open all year round.

There are several locations to try and catch a spawning brown or rainbow trout. When the fish are biting the fishing can be hot , but of course the reverse applies as well.
